Breast augmentation surgery

Breast augmentation

Among the most sought after aesthetic interventions worldwide, breast augmentation addresses patients who want to redefine their bust. Today, this procedure is not a simple addition to the breasts, but it involves reshaping, according to the proportions of the patient. If a few years earlier, breast augmentation was understood as the procedure by which the breasts were enlarged, in modern surgery the concept of naturalness and harmony of proportions began to prevail.

Informations about the medical procedure

Breast augmentation can be done by two methods:
(1) by use of silicone implants;
(2) by lipofilling.

Lipofilling is a procedure that involves augmentation of the breast with own fat. Considered a cutting-edge technique in aesthetic surgery, lipofilling is a treatment option superior to the classic ones and is completely harmless, since the substrate used is actually own fatty tissue transferred to the breasts. It has the ability to perfectly integrate and contains stem cells that contribute to rejuvenation of the transferred tissue. Breast reshaping can be done in a few sessions by progressively injecting the tissue, what allows a gradual redefinition of the breast proportions. Breast augmentation by lipofilling is considered a revolutionary technique, since the result gives a feeling of naturalness, while the volume is definitive.

Although more commonly used, breaking implants redefine the breast shapes by positioning either under the mammary gland or retro pectoral (behind the pectoralis major). For a balanced body, however, with this intervention a breast symmetrization is performed and their position is improved. The procedure usually begins by choosing the breast implants (round or pear-shaped), in relation to each patients’ body frame and in train of measurements. The amount of glandular tissue, as well as the elasticity of the skin should be sufficient to cover each implant, so that the outline thereof is as little perceptible to touch as possible. The operation lasts more than two hours, and the prosthesis can be kept in up to 20 years, depending on the product used. The prosthesis is guaranteed for life, but, with aging, a process of fatty atrophy and loss of skin elasticity unfolds, which generates breast ptosis and consequently, the need for replacement of the implants.

The breast shape and proportions confers not only sensuality to a woman, but it defines the perception of her own image. A woman regarding herself as beautiful is self-confident and is more easily accepted into society.

During the consultation, the doctor will draw attention to possible deficiencies in volume or asymmetries presented by the patient, in order to determine the method by which the breast augmentation surgery will be performed, as well as all related details (surgical approach mammary prosthesis positioning, associated procedures, etc.). The shape and size of prosthesis used are important in achieving the optimum volume of the breast, so the patient will have to express their desires as clearly as possible, so that the operation is successful.

Between one to three hours.

The operation is performed under general anesthesia, although some doctors opt for local anesthesia by sedation.

In most cases, patients remain hospitalized 24 hours after breast augmentation.

Side effects and surgical risks

Formation of hematoma or seroma (it can be prevented by a proper surgical technique). Also, a risk of unaesthetic scarring or breakage of the implant exists, but very rarely.

After surgery advice

The patient will receive a bustier to wear for eight weeks. Thanks to very effective anesthetic substances as well as to parenteral administration of a local analgesic, the patient will not accuse postoperative pain. Also, the scars will be coated with a dermabond (a special skin glue), so that the patient may shower 24 hours after surgery. It is important that the patient operated will avoid exertion, lifting or pushing of heavy objects.

For women who are already experiencing a sharp breast ptosis (sagging breasts), the procedure is not effective, because the shape can not be corrected with an implant, but through surgery (breast lift). Exceptions are the cases where breast ptosis is minor. The surgeon may refuse patients who have unrealistic expectations or when believing that the operation could endanger their health.

Although the patient can return to work a few days after surgery, the end result can be appreciated only after six months or even a year later, when the swelling will disappear and the implant will stabilize.
